Bighorn Mountain Challenge

June 17 - 21, 2013

Day One: The route we will take from the trailhead into the cabins will vary based on prevailing conditions but will always involve rolling terrain with stunning views and a high probability of encountering the local wildlife. If you or your group is up for it, we may even start directly from Nordegg itself. Upon arriving at the cabins, we will settle in and prepare the camping gear for our two nights up on the ridge.

Day Two: After a mountain-style breakfast and safety brief for the day, we will hike up a creek bed and complete a steady climb that will take us up to a sheltered campsite at around 2,000 metres. This location is a gem in itself and offers clean spring water in an alpine setting. The guide(s) will prepare your meal and the remainder of the evening is spent under the stars and trying to get the wolves below to return our howls.

Day Three: After breakfast and coffee, we will spend the day exploring the chain of ridges and high points. Almost no height gain means that we can relax and enjoy the views and concentrate on finding that special photograph as the angle of the sun changes throughout the day. After we return to the campsite in the late afternoon, we will relax, eat and sleep once more under the stars.

Day Four: Following a leisurely breakfast, we will ensure we properly apply “Leave No Trace” principles to our campsite before descending back to the cabins for a home-cooked supper and well-earned relaxing time around the campfire.

Day Five: Breakfast and coffee will set us up for the route home via a series of little-known trails, either back to Nordegg itself or a local trailhead.

Note: Weather and snow conditions permitting, this trip may also be achieved on snowshoes or skis. Contact us for current conditions.
