Wilderness Survival In Winter

April 16 - 18, 2013

Day One: After meeting in Nordegg and a general review of gear and the itinerary, we will head out to the trailhead and start to ski or snowshoe to the cabins. The route selection will vary depending on weather conditions and the assessed ability of the group. Along the way we will get to know each other, take a practical look at equipment and clothing selection and identify ways nature can assist us with navigation. After arriving at the cabins and settling in, we will enjoy a hearty home-cooked meal and consider the basics of survival before preparing for the next day.

Day Two: Following a basic breakfast and safety brief we will head out into the winter forest with just what we wear and carry in our pockets. After identifying if there are any predators in the area and selecting a suitable site, we will prepare to spend the night in the open by constructing an improvised winter shelter, gathering any available food opportunities, learning how to construct and start a fire without matches or a lighter, making dinner and surviving the night. A clear sky may also enable us to conduct some basic night sky navigation.

Day Three: After breakfast and dismantling the winter bivouac site, ensuring we follow “Leave No Trace” principles, we will head back to the cabins where we will reorganize, repack and review key elements learned. Following lunch, using improvised navigation techniques, we will make our way back to the trailhead where all participants will receive a certificate of achievement.
